Featuring:

SuLei Cellars, Walla Walla, Washington

Joining us for the first time, Tanya Woodley & Elaine Jomwe of SuLei Cellars in the Walla Walla Valley, AVA, in beautiful Washington State Wine Country, bring their Gold Medal award wining 2013 Sauvignon Blanc to kick off our first course of the 5 course culinary adventure aboard The Big Gay Train. It was this thirst for the ever evolving and illusive mystery of winemaking that brought them to the decision to make a life of this passionate pursuit.  It is the belief that a good wine begins in the vineyard that led them to pursue this life in Walla Walla. Tanya believes in minimal intervention winemaking, allowing the fruit to present itself under guidance, revealing the true essence of the grape.

Olivia Brion, Wild Horse Valley, Napa, California

Vintner, John Newmeyer brings his Olivia Brion Chardonnay from Heron Lake Vineyard n the south end of Wild Horse Valley, 1,200 feet higher than the Napa Valley floor and five miles east of Napa town. Wild Horse Valley is a distinct viticultural appellation: while Napa Valley has hot summer afternoons, Wild Horse's proximity to the San Pablo and Suisun bays exposes it to cool westerly winds. That weather, along with the rocky volcanic soil, results in small yields and fruit of great color, intensity and minerality. John's 2012 vintage has pure fruit notes of lemon and white peaches and layered flavors of creme brûlée, baked apples, and quince jelly. The structure is elegant and stylish, the mouth feel is fresh and lively, yet deeply flavored without being weighty.

Azari Vineyards, Sonoma Coast, California

Azari Vineyards in the Petaluma Gap geological region of the Sonoma Coast AVA has 14 acres of estate vineayrd, producting Riesling, Viognier, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Vintner, Kaveh Azari, shares his 2011 Corkscrew Pinot Noir with guests on the Big Gay Train.

"A powerhouse pinot from Corkscrew. This new release catches your attention with scents of smoky black cherry, vanilla, and pine. Flavors of tart cranberry, boysenberry, and complex spices lead the charge, with refreshing acidity to clean the slate for the next sip. There’s a nice balance overall between the components. The rich texture that is a hallmark of pinot noir is contrasted with the acid backbone, so the wine is not too flabby and is a pleasure to taste." - Neal Coats, Professional Wine Judge

Jalama Wines, Santa Barbara, California

Featuring our first wine from Southern California's Santa Barbara wine region, winemaker Mark Cargasacchi brings his 2011 Santa Ynez Valley La Presa Petite Sirah, - good acidity, balanced smokey oak, big pepper and sour cherries on the palate. A great wine to pair with one of Chef Kelly's course creations! "I try to let my wines really speak more about the vineyards they are from by allowing most of the fruit to ferment with the native yeasts. This develops a lot more unique flavors and a complexity that can be lacking when using just commercial yeast." - winemaker, Mark Cargasacchi, Jalama Wines
